Kampot: Environmental impact of the proposed new artificial beach

The Kampot provincial administration has ordered the developer to reassess the environmental impact of a new artificial beach project in Kampot province. In the meantime, sand dredging is to be temporarily halted, pending the new environmental impact assessment.

The Governor of Kampot, H.E. Cheav Tay, said that during the site inspection, the activities of digging channels for boats and dredging sand could have a negative impact on the environment, especially on the mangrove forest and other biodiversity areas, due to the excessive size and depth of the excavations.

The administration has therefore ordered the developer to find a new method of excavating the canal that has less impact on the environment. In the meantime, the company must also stop dredging the sand due to the lack of clarity in the study.

“However, the other general works are proceeding smoothly. To date, they are 60-70% complete. We also request the developer to speed up the process so that he can serve tourists as soon as possible,” he said.

The 234-hectare artificial beach project is located at Meas Techo Sen Beach Resort in Toteung Tngay village and Kep Thmey village, Boeung Touk commune, Teuk Chhou district, which is being developed by IGB Cambodia Co Ltd.
